I Got a Refund From Epic Games. Here's How.

I accidentally bought a game on the Epic Games Store that I already owned on Steam. Getting a refund was surprisingly easy but there were a few steps I had to figure out.

I purchased Horizon Walker for $29.99 on the Epic Store. I had a gift card and was excited to use it. About an hour later I realized I already owned the same game on Steam from a Humble Bundle years ago.

I went to the Epic Games support page and found the self-service refund option. Here is exactly the path: Account > Purchases > Find the game > Request Refund > Select reason.

I selected "Accidental purchase" as the reason. I had not launched the game at all. The refund was approved automatically within a few hours.

The money went back to my original payment method within four business days. Painless.

However, I later tried to refund a different game that I had actually played for about 30 minutes. The same week. That refund was rejected. Epic flagged my account for refund abuse because I had filed two refunds in a short period.

Epic does not publish their refund abuse thresholds but based on my experience, more than one refund in a 30-day period triggers a review. Your account gets flagged and subsequent refunds are rejected manually.

My advice: use Epic refunds sparingly. They are generous for one-off mistakes but they track your history carefully for abuse.
