Google Play's 48-Hour Refund Window Is Kind of a Lie

Google Play says you have 48 hours to request a refund. But this window only applies to automatic approvals. If you have a legitimate reason, you can get a refund weeks or months later.

I bought a $29.99 navigation app for a road trip through areas with no service. The app promised offline maps. When I actually needed it in the middle of nowhere, it kept crashing. I had pre-downloaded maps for three states and the app would open for ten seconds then close.

I was stuck on a highway in rural Oregon with no service and a broken app.

I requested a refund six days later. Google's automated system rejected it. The 48-hour window had passed. But I had purchased a product that did not work for its intended purpose.

I filled out Google's contact form with "Technical issue with purchase." I explained the situation and mentioned the 48-hour window was unreasonable for an app that needed to be tested in an offline environment. I attached crash logs.

A Google support agent responded within two days. She apologized and processed a manual refund.

Google's 48-hour window is a guideline, not a hard rule. If you have a good reason and explain it clearly, you can get an exception.
