Hulu Charged Me for Two Accounts for Six Months. I Got $120 Back.

Somehow I ended up with two Hulu accounts. One was my old account that I thought I had cancelled. The other was a new account I created after I forgot my old password. I was paying $9.99 per month for each. For six months. Total wasted: $120.

I only noticed when I checked my PayPal subscriptions. There they were: two separate Hulu charges every month. I contacted Hulu support and explained the situation. The first agent said they could not refund charges older than 30 days.

I asked for a supervisor. I explained that it was clearly an error and that Hulu should have flagged duplicate accounts. The supervisor reviewed my account history and approved a refund for three of the six months: $60.

Hulu's policy on subscription refunds is strict. But supervisors have discretion for goodwill refunds. Being polite and explaining the situation clearly helped.

Now I keep a spreadsheet of all my subscriptions. I check it against my credit card statement every month. It sounds like overkill but it has caught two other duplicate charges since then.
