PlayStation Store Refund: The Policy Sony Hides From You

PlayStation Store has a refund policy. You just cannot find it easily. After digging through Sony's support documentation, I found the actual policy and the exceptions they do not advertise.

The Official Policy

Sony's policy: all purchases of games, DLC, and add-ons are final. No refunds after download. Period. This is stated clearly in their terms of service.

The Hidden Exception

Buried in Sony's support articles is a mention of refunds for "defective content." If a game does not function as intended due to technical issues, Sony may grant a refund as a one-time exception. This is not advertised anywhere.

Pre-Order Cancellations

You can cancel a pre-order on PlayStation Store anytime before release. After release, the standard policy applies. I have cancelled two pre-orders without issues.

PS Plus Subscriptions

PS Plus subscriptions are non-refundable. I tried to cancel a yearly subscription three days after purchase and was told no.

The Voluntary Refund Button

Sony recently added a "Request Refund" button to the PlayStation Store interface for some regions. It is not widely advertised. If you go to your transaction history, some purchases show a refund option. It works for a limited subset of purchases within 14 days.

How to Actually Get a Refund

If the game is genuinely broken, contact PlayStation support, request a supervisor, and reference "defective content." Provide evidence of the issue. Be prepared to escalate multiple times. Sony makes this difficult on purpose.

The best strategy: do not buy games on PlayStation Store on launch day. Wait for patches and reviews. This is a sad reality of Sony's refund policy.
