The Subscription Trap: How I Got $200 Back From Forgotten Renewals
I was paying for subscriptions I completely forgot about for months. When I finally noticed, I had wasted over $200. Here is how I got most of it back.
I checked my credit card statement and found subscriptions for: a VPN service I stopped using ($12.99/month for 4 months), a cloud storage service I never used ($9.99/month for 6 months), and a meditation app I tried once ($5.99/month for 8 months). Total: over $200 down the drain.
I contacted each company separately. Here is what happened:
The VPN company refused to refund anything beyond the current month. I escalated and they still refused.
The cloud storage company refunded 3 of the 6 months as a goodwill gesture. I got $60 back.
The meditation app refunded all 8 months. Full $48 back.
I also went through my bank and asked if they could help with the VPN charge. Since the charges were authorized (I had agreed to the subscription), the bank could not help. But they suggested using privacy.com or virtual card numbers for future subscriptions, which I now do.
Overall I got $108 back out of $200. Not perfect but better than nothing.
Lessons Learned
Check your credit card statement monthly. Set calendar reminders for every subscription. Use virtual card numbers that can be paused between payments. And always ask for a refund even if you think you have no chance. The worst they can say is no.
I now keep a spreadsheet of every subscription with renewal dates. Sounds obsessive but it has saved me hundreds since.
