T-Mobile Added a $5 'Regulatory Fee' to My Plan. I Got It Removed After Three Calls.

I signed up for T-Mobile with a $50 per month plan. By the second month, my bill was $62. There was a $5 "regulatory fee," a $3 "administrative fee," and service taxes. None of these were disclosed when I signed up.

I called T-Mobile and asked why the fees were not shown at checkout. The agent said they are standard and all carriers charge them. I pointed out that T-Mobile advertises "all-in pricing" on their website but does not show these fees until the first bill.

I filed a complaint with the FCC about deceptive pricing. Two weeks later, T-Mobile's executive team contacted me. They offered to credit my account $50 for the fees charged so far. They also offered to let me out of my contract without penalty if I was unhappy. I took the $50 credit and stayed.

T-Mobile's hidden fees are a known issue. The FTC has investigated carriers for this practice. If you are unhappy about hidden fees, file an FCC complaint. It gets results.

I prepay for three months at a time now to avoid surprise charges.
