Uber Charged Me 3x Surge Pricing for a Ride That Never Came. I Got $80 Back.
I booked an Uber during a surge. The fare was $80 for a normally $25 ride. I accepted it because I needed to get to the airport. The driver accepted, then sat in place for 10 minutes. Then cancelled. I was rebooked at another surge price. I ended up paying $120 for a ride that should have cost $30.
I contacted Uber support. I explained that the first driver cancelled without making any progress toward me. Uber's policy says you should not be charged extra if the driver cancels. I had already been charged the surge for the first ride, then charged again for the second.
Uber's support refunded the first ride charge of $80. The second ride was still expensive but at least I got to the airport.
Uber can see when a driver cancels and when you are rebooked. They do not automatically refund the surge difference. You have to ask. Always check your receipt after any ride where the driver cancels or takes a noticeably longer route.
