Walmart Sent Me the Wrong Item and Wanted Me to Return It at My Own Expense. No Way.

I ordered a $200 air fryer from Walmart.com. They delivered a box of kitchen utensils worth maybe $20. The box had someone else's shipping label on it. I contacted Walmart customer service. They said I needed to return the wrong item to get a refund. I said I was not driving 20 miles to return something I did not order.

Under US law, if a company sends you something you did not order, you are legally entitled to keep it as a gift. But Walmart was not sending unordered merchandise. They sent the wrong item. Different legal situation.

I escalated to a supervisor and explained that sending the wrong item and requiring me to fix it was unreasonable. The supervisor approved a refund without requiring a return. The $200 was back on my card within three days.

Walmart's return policy for online orders is actually generous, but their frontline agents are trained to push for returns first. If you push back politely, they will often waive the return requirement for mis-shipped items.

Always take photos of the wrong item and the shipping label before contacting support. Evidence speeds everything up.
