How to Get an Xbox Refund for Games You Actually Played

Microsoft limits refunds to purchases made within 14 days with minimal playtime. But I have gotten refunds for games I played for over 10 hours. Here is how.

The Self-Service Portal

Go to account.microsoft.com and sign in. Click Payment & billing > Order history. Find the purchase and click Request a refund. The system automatically checks eligibility. If approved, the refund is processed immediately.

This works most of the time for recent purchases with low playtime. For anything beyond that, you need to talk to a human.

The Technical Issue Route

If the game has technical problems, your chances improve significantly. Microsoft tracks known issues and if your game is on their list, refunds are easier. I got a refund on a game that had a known save corruption bug, even though I had 12 hours played.

Game Pass Purchases

If you buy DLC for a Game Pass game and later the game leaves Game Pass, you are entitled to a refund for the DLC. Microsoft does not advertise this but I have seen it mentioned in support documentation.

Subscription Cancellations

Xbox Game Pass subscriptions can be cancelled anytime. If you cancel within 30 days of a recurring charge, Microsoft often refunds the charge as a goodwill gesture.

Microsoft's refund system for Xbox is the most consumer-friendly among the major platforms. They are not perfect but they are miles ahead of Sony and Nintendo.
