Why Thanking a Support Agent Before They Help Gets Better Results
Psychology experiment: I sent the same refund request to two different agents at the same company. Email A ended with: "I look forward to your help. Thank you in advance." Email B ended with: "I expect this to be resolved promptly." Email A was approved in 2 hours. Email B was rejected in 24 hours. The principle of reciprocity: when you thank someone in advance, they feel obligated to live up to your positive expectation. When you demand something, they feel defensive and look for reasons to say no. I now always thank agents in advance. I acknowledge that they deal with difficult situations. I express appreciation for their time. This simple change has dramatically improved my refund success rate from about 50% to over 75%. Agents are people. They respond to kindness.
